In this episode of Exploring Alternatives, the team takes on the challenge of transforming a 40ft shipping container into a cozy tiny house. With a budget of $35,000, they roll up their sleeves and get to work, utilizing recycled materials from Habitat for Humanity ReStore and a local mill. Luke, a skilled Fine Furniture maker, showcases his talent by crafting custom wood furniture and beautiful windows for the space. Despite initial plans to complete the project in 2 months, it ends up taking over 4 months due to unexpected expenses like a septic tank and sauna, pushing the budget up.
Situated on Vancouver Island, the property offers the perfect backdrop for this unique project, just a stone's throw away from the beach. The team aims to create a spacious studio apartment vibe within the confines of the shipping container, opting for minimal modifications to the exterior. They strategically add windows and a roof made from milled wood sourced from the property, blending the indoors with the lush outdoor surroundings seamlessly. The container's double end opening doors provide flexibility, allowing for easy access and potential relocation in the future.
Inside the tiny house, the living area boasts a versatile sofa bed, Luke's handcrafted wood furniture, and a sleek concrete countertop kitchen equipped with an induction cooktop. The bathroom exudes luxury with its fully tiled walls, secondhand tiles, and a hot water on demand system for added comfort. The master bedroom offers a cozy retreat with a queen-sized bed, custom windows for natural light, and a split cycle unit for heating and cooling. Additional features like a wood-fired sauna, cold shower, and a small shed for utilities further enhance the functionality and charm of this innovative shipping container home.
